Overall - April 2017:
We’d been hearing good things about Pie Guys for awhile before we finally had a chance to pay them a visit. They have a take-out location on Linwell Road in the north end, and the pizza was always very good, so we were curious to see how their full service restaurant and bar out in the city’s west end would fare. Unless you live in the west-end, it’s in a fairly out of the way location, in a nondescript plaza surrounded by residential subdivisions.
It was pissing down rain the night we went. I mean monsoon-like, biblical shit! We were lucky not to drown on our way in from the parking lot! The place was packed, which was a good sign. Hockey playoffs on two big projection screens with a decent sized dining and bar area completed the ambiance making it a fairly typical neighborhood sports-bar/restaurant.
The wings were good, decent sized and adequately spiced. Not terribly memorable, but good enough to please us. But the real prize-winner here was the pizza. Although BHON is typically a wing-focused group, we certainly appreciate a good pizza from time to time, and this is where Pie Guy’s really shined. We ordered a couple 12-slice trays, a pepperoni, mushroom & bacon, along with a pepperoni, hot italian sausage & hot-pepper mix. Both were excellent, thin-crust and loaded with toppings. Almost every bar serves pizza, so it takes something special to make one that truely stands out from the crowd. In this case, Pie Guy’s certainly did!
No Guinness on tap, but we had Rickards or Keith’s Red (I can’t remember which they had). And at the end of the night, the bill was quite reasonable for what we had.
Overall, a good night!
