Rules of Engagement:
- Suggested location must be located in the Niagara Region, preferably within a 30 minute drive from St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and/or Welland.
- Suggested location must be open for regular business hours on Thursday evenings and not close earlier than 11:00pm, including the kitchen.
- Suggested location must be able to accommodate a group of variable size, typically 6-12 people, without reservations or advance notice.
- Suggested location should have Guinness on tap (the official beer of BHON) or alternatively, a decent selection of craft and premium beers on tap.
- Suggested location should feature chicken wings as a regular menu item, not as an appetizer, special feature, or bar-only special menu item and be capable of preparing and serving them in quantities of 50-100 at a time.
- Suggested location should not feature live entertainment such as, but not limited to: DJ and Dance Nights, Live Bands, Open Mic Nights, Trivia, Karaoke or the like on Thursday nights. Although these types of entertainment are enjoyed by many, we prefer an environment conducive to conversation during our wing-nights. Any other night of the week, knock yourself out!
What Our Ratings Mean?
What does it take to get a Good BHON rating?
Many people ask us - "What's the best place to go for wings?" Although it
may seem like a trivial question to answer, there are many factors that go
into determining the overall score for a wing spot. First of all, it
should be noted that our reviews are purely subjective and reflect the
opinions of the members of BHON that were present at the time. Of course,
everyone has their own tastes and what appeals to us may not be what
appeals to you. In many cases, our reviews reflect our own cynical and
sarcastic sense of humour and project opinions that are as individualistic
as the people who wrote them. In any case, our comments should be viewed
as entertainment rather than endorsements for any particular bar or pub.
So what does it take to earn a BHON score and how do we determine their
relative ranking? To answer that, we weigh each establishment against a
set of criteria we call the DBSP - The Drunken Bar
Slob Percentile. In addition to these criteria, we also evaluate the
location based on whether everyone had a good time. The resulting score is
given as a percentage and the location is listed alphabetically in the
appropriate section on our page.
The chart below outlines the requirements to be met to obtain scores at
various levels of the BHON ranking system.
How We Rank:
Percentage |
Ranking |
Required Crtieria |
The 100 Club! |
100% |
The 100 Club |
Location not only meets all DBSP criteria but exceeds our
expections in at least one if not more areas. This ranking is given to
establishments that have displayed consistently outstanding wings,
beer and service and have gone out of their way to make a memorable
impression every time we visit. |
The GOOD! |
|
BHON Verified |
Location has a score between 60%-99% (see criteria below) and has been revisited within the past year.
These sites have been verified by BHON to still meet our expectations since their original review date.
|
|
Good |
Location has a score between 60%-99% (see criteria below) but has not been revisited within the past year.
It is possible their operational status or score could have changed since our last review.
|
90-99% |
Exceptional |
Location not only meets all DBSP criteria but exceeds our
expections in at least one if not more areas. Locations in this
category typically become part of our regular rotation and are revisited
regularly. |
80-89% |
Excellent |
Location meets all required DBSP criteria and has proven to be
a consistent performer. |
70-79% |
Above Average |
Location meets most of the required DBSP criteria with a few
minor issues. Often a score in this range indicates a place with excellent
wings and perhaps no good beer on tap or another deficiency that could be
easily addressed. |
60-69% |
Average |
Decent wings but nothing memorable. An average location meets some of
the DBSP criteria and fails at others. A 60% score is the cutoff number
for ranking in the GOOD section of the BHON page. |
The BAD! |
50-59% |
Below Average |
Deficient in many areas of the DBSP or pissed us off in some way. Not
necessarily worth writing off, many locations in this range show
potential and could improve by addressing their shortcomings. |
Below 50% |
Sucked |
Failed to meet most DBSP criteria. Bad or non-existent wings, too
expensive, no good beer on tap, lousy service or all of the above. Not
likely to see a return visit by BHON. |
The UGLY! |
R.I.P. |
Closed |
Location has gone out of business since last reviewed. |
Re-Vists and Re-Reviews:
BHON frequently revisits many locations but does not necessarily re-review
each time. Usually, if there are any notable changes from the previous
visit, a review will be updated accordingly.
