RIP - 2014:
Not sure what happened with this place....it was barely Hemingway’s for a few months, then the name changed again. This location is still open, now called ’Monty’s Gastropub’. Whether this was due to a naming issue or another change of ownership remains to be determined. Will have to check it out sometime and see for ourselves.
Overall - May 2013:
What can we say about Hemingway’s. Hmm, let me think on that.
Atmosphere: - The layout basically hadn’t changed from when it was The Street. I think they might have knocked out a wall or two to open the space up a bit. But other than that, pretty standard bar look. Not to mention that the TV above only worked once we messed with the power bar hanging from the ceiling. Of course, that caused the lights over the pool table to go out, but hey - hockey before pool tables. When the cook came over to fix the pool table lights, standing on one of our chairs was the only way he could reach. And we had to keep proding him to make sure he didn’t take out the TV that we were watching. The patio was open, but the night was a little bit nipply to be sitting out there.
Beer: - Disappointing to day the least. No Guinness, no Rickard’s Red. We ended up with Keith’s. Not the worst choice but definitely not the best.
Wings: - These were the real letdown of the night. Over cooked, not saucy and barely big enough. Maybe we are spoiled by some of the other places that we have been, but we haven’t had wings like this in a long time. And for this we are truely thankful.
Entertainment: - We kind of knew we were in trouble when they advertise the karaoke on the sign at the front of the building, but hey, sometimes it has been entertaining. That night was not one of those nights. The ancients who took up the mics at the beginning could carry a tune a bit. Too bad the only reason any of us knew the songs were because our grandparents used to belt them out along with the old Victrola. The singer’s voices were as scratchy as the LP’s that the songs were ripped from. That pretty much sealed the night for us.
In conclusion, Hemingway’s is not going to be a spot that we visit again any time soon. |
