RIP - Sometime in 2016:
Note sure when Syndicate packed it in, but the St. Catharines location is now a Hyundai dealership. I believe the one in Niagara Falls is still operating. Too bad....we never got a chance to return to try them a second time.
Overall - Oct 2012:
When we first walked into the new Syndicate Restaurant, we knew right away it would be different than your typical BHON experience. A swank cozy atmosphere, cloth napkins and twinkling candles made us feel like it would be a place better suited to take your significant other for a ’date night’ rather than a beer and wing joint. Knowing that the Syndicate shares its roots with the same gang that brought us Taps Brewing Company and its sister spot, the Syndicate Brewpub on Lundy’s Lane, we figured we should stick around....and we’re glad we did!
The wings were large and cooked to perfection with a crispy skin and juicy throughout. The ’Crazy What’ and ’Ring the Alarm’ sauces were unique and tasty, though not nearly as hot as we were expecting. You could tell there was some care put into them and it wasn’t some generic hot sauce slopped out of a bottle. The presentation was also immaculate with fresh blue cheese dressing and veggies on the side. No wicker baskets and store-bought dips here folks! For the dinner crowd, the Syndicate offers a flat fee $20 create-your-own 3 course dinner menu with a range of items complete with suggested beer pairings.
The beer menu consisted of a combination of craft-brews from both Taps and the Lundy’s Lane (formerly Niagara Falls Brewing Company) locations. We enjoyed their new dark lager, a crisp full-bodied beer with hints of chocolate and coffee overtones and a refreshing finish. Also sampled were the Niagara’s Best Logger Lager, and Blonde Ale. At $4.65 a pint, the beers were suprising bargain.
A final suprise came at the end of the night, with a bill that was much lower than expected.
In all honesty, the Syndicate is NOT supposed to be a wing joint, and BHON isn’t their target audience. With a menu emphasizing ’Farm to Table’ cuisine, an ’Executive Chef’ and items such as ’Duck Poutine’ and ’Creme Brulee’ we almost felt guilty just ordering pub fare.
Overall, a unique and different wing night. We’ll definitely be returning! |
