RIP - 2019:
Closed quietly sometime in late 2019. It had gone downhill significantly since it first opened and never really recovered. Mediocre and overpriced food weren’t enough to drown out the blaring TV’s I guess.
Overall - Jan 2011:
When it comes to franchised chain restaurants, you can usually expect a dining experience that is at best predictable. From the bar atmosphere to the menu items themselves, chains serve up a consistent environment no matter what city you may find yourself in. From a BHON standpoint, that usually means mediocre overpriced wings stuffed somewhere between the appetizers and the entree section of the menu. So with the recent opening a new Hoops Sports Bar in the Niagara Square, we kept our expectations in check to see what this new location would bring us.
Originally from the GTA, the Hoops franchise sells itself as Southern Ontario’s Premiere Sports bar. First off, the place seems much bigger inside than it does from the outside. How’d they do that? The second thing you’ll notice is the massive number of TV’s hanging just about everywhere around the place. If you didn’t know this was a sports bar you’d think you’d walked into the Futureshop store by mistake. (It’s at the other end of the mall folks). But most importantly...what about the wings?
In a word....excellent! We ordered a couple party packs of suicide wings which came with veggies, ranch dip and a pile of seasoned fries to help take the burn off. The suicide sauce was top-notch, endorphin releasing hot....but with a unique tasty flavour that had a hint of caribbean jerk and chilli-pepper to it. Anyone can make food HOT....the trick is to make it tasty at the same time. As for value, the wings were huge at about 7 per pound. Their regular menu price of $8.95 for a single order isn’t a great deal, but the half price tuesdays and thursdays made them an exceptional value for our evening.
Finally, Guinness on tap and a high TAVAR score made Hoops the first ever chain to earn a 90 percentile score on the first outing and definitely places them into the regular rotation for the Niagara Falls BHON circuit. We wish them best of luck in their new location! |
